What Is an Ellis Certified 'Mystery Shopper'?"

Ellis contracts with certified individuals to “pose” as potential “rental prospects” looking for an apartment. The purpose of a mystery shopper is to evaluate the sales performance of apartment personnel. Hence, your objective is to create the optimum environment for the apartment representative and articulate your findings in a written format.

"Why Is It Called 'Mystery Shopping'?"

“Mystery” is the operative word. Obviously, the clients do not want the apartment representatives to be aware that they are being evaluated; otherwise, how could their performance be fairly assessed? Part of your responsibility is to remain “anonymous” as the “mystery shopper”.

"How Do I Get Certified As a 'Mystery Shopper'?"

To register as a mystery shopper with Ellis you will need to complete the Shopper Application. (Please note that submitting the application does not automatically qualify you as a shopper for clients of Ellis Property Management Services (EPMS).) You must meet certain guidelines before your application can be approved

You must review and agree to the Independent Contractor Agreement.

You must complete and pass the Ellis Online Certification Program. A passing test score of 90% or above is required before you can begin shopping for clients of Ellis.

Once you have successfully fulfilled the requirements noted above, you will be able to review shopping opportunities for clients of Ellis and self select shops; that is, you will have the ability to “accept” the shops you would like to complete.

Ellis is the largest nationwide apartment shopping company; we contract with certified professionals to over 1,300 apartment communities every month!

Shoppers find Ellis staff responsive, helpful, and fair.
Ellis staff is readily available by telephone and email to assist with shopping report questions and challenges.
Ellis’ web based system allows the eligible shopper to self-select shops and to sign up as a back-up for shops already selected by others.
Ellis shoppers are paid twice a month.

"What Is Required To Be an Ellis Certified 'Mystery Shopper'?"

As a mystery shopper, you need to be responsible, dependable, and even more importantly, fair and unbiased. Since you are evaluating an apartment representative’s job performance, it is critical that your findings are accurate.

Property management companies use the information you provide on the shopping report for a number of reasons. Many property management companies use the information to determine if their representative needs additional training; that is, these companies want to ensure their representatives have all the tools required to be successful at their job.

We want to give the apartment representative every opportunity to do a great job. Therefore, your participation as a mystery shopper is an integral part of the mystery shop process.

"How Do I Get Paid as an Ellis Certified 'Mystery Shopper'?"

Ellis certified shoppers are independent contractors, and therefore, no taxes are withheld from your check. You are paid contract fees, and you will be required to complete a W-9 form. For each apartment shopping report you complete within the specifications, you will be paid a flat fee. Ellis certified shoppers are paid twice a month.
